Brush it off

I need your help.

Imagine you have a special needs child.

She has autism.

She has some pretty severe sensory aversion.

She has some fears.

She has super, crazy, thick, wavy hair.

She is going through a “water near the head equals screaming unless I’m in a pool” phase.

She also has severe dandruff.

And her hair is black.

Faith has been in a bit of a challenging phase lately. She does NOT want her hair washed. By that I mean that the sight of the shampoo can result in screaming, thrashing and throwing. I have tried almost every trick I know of. We have washed Daisy together, we have washed her stuffies, I have brought her in the shower with me. We have tried using the sink. We have read social stories. We have watched cartoons. We have watched Elmo’s world. We tried “dry” shampoo.

I KNOW eventually we will move out of this, but I need some advice for the here and now.

Her hair is a mess.

The dandruff is awful.

How awful?

This.

I brush her hair several times a day hoping to help loosen it and help it fall out. We have had a nylon bristle brush, but she said it was too scratchy and hurt. It also didn’t seem able to penetrate the thickness of her hair. She is ok with my using a plastic ball tipped vent brush, but it does not seen to help bring the flakes out of the hair.

Has anyone ever used a boars hair bristle brush. Are the bristles softer than the nylon bristles? They are kind of expensive but if they can get through the hair and help get the flakes out, I’m willing to buy one.

Get Clean! Plus a giveaway!

I am going to be honest. I went into this review opportunity thinking that I was smarter than the average bear. I already knew that there are things in the average cleaners. Yucky things. We had already made the move several years ago to cleaner cleaners. Our family learned the hard way that the stuff lurking in cleansers can be nasty.

At one point in our daughters young life, it was thought that she might have Kawasaki Disease. At that time, one of the possible causes of this disease was thought to be exposure to cleaners. As soon as Kawasaki Disease was on the table, I went on a mad rampage, purging nasty chemical cleaners. Pine-Sol? Gone. Lysol? Tossed. Windex? See ya. In their place I bought wonderful, natural cleaners. Like Method, Caldrea, and Mrs. Meyers.

Time passed, and it turns out that Faith’s mysterious fevers and illness’s are from a rare genetic disorder called Familial Mediterranean Fever Syndrome. My revamp of our cleaners stayed, but I will admit, I haven’t looked too far into the implications of all those chemicals since our first purging. Have you ever looked at the Household Database? That is some scary stuff.

Meet my cleaner cupboard.

Ok, here is the reality of this shot. I have lots of help.

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you also know I have lupus. What does that have to do with anything? Well, it’s twofold. First, I have limited energy and second, my skin is extra, super, crazy sensitive. Even when using the natural cleaners, my skin breaks out. My hands literally split and rashes creep up my arms. Because obviously something that does that to my skin is ok to be around my kids and pets, right? Right?  Add in the fact that with kids and pets, I’m doing a lot of cleaning. Not only does that hurt my skin, think of the waste. Empty plastic bottles. Landfills. Bad.

Where am I going with this? I’m glad you asked.

I was recently given the opportunity to review the Shaklee Get Clean system.

I figured I would be one tough cookie on this.

Meet the Get Clean system.

One of the most important things is what you won’t find in the Shaklee products, which have been reviewed and endorsed for their safety by Healthy Child Healthy World {http://healthychild.org}.  They believe that health isn’t just about what you put in your body; it’s about everything around you. They bring you a full line of natural and nontoxic cleaning choices that are Safe for You, Your Home, and Your Planet® called Get Clean®.

·         No harmful fumes or hazardous chemicals.

·         Outperforms 20 national leading brands.

·         You would spend $3400 for ready to use cleaners to get the same amount of clean found in the Get Clean Starter Kit!*

·         Features Basic H2® Organic Super Cleaning Concentrate – just 1/4 tsp. makes 16oz. of all-purpose cleaner for only 3 cents.

·         And when you purchase the Get Clean Starter Kit you also make a positive impact on the planet:

·         Keep 108 pounds of packaging waste from landfills.

·         Eliminate 248 pounds of greenhouse gas.

M’kay, that’s good to know, but…..do they work? I was originally going to focus my review on just one product in the Get Clean line, giving y’all the low down truth on how it performed. I took all the yuck cleaners out from under my sink and started using every part of the Get Clean line. By golly, I was going to find the weakest link in this and use that for my review.

This looks better. Now on to the flaw in my review plan. They all work. Not only do they work, they work great. Scratch that, they work amazing.

Laundry? Clean and soft.

Dishes? No spots or haze.

Bathroom? Fresh and clean.

My car? Dust and Cheeto free.

Windows? Streak free.

My review plan? Tossed out like those yucky cleaners. So instead here is what I want you to take away from this review:

My skin is rash free and soft.

I have been using every single part of the Shaklee Get Clean System for over two weeks and my hands are perfect. I have (almost) begun to enjoy cleaning. Now, the products I was sent to review are part of the Get Clean unscented line, but after using them without an incident for a week or so, I took an additional step. I added a few drops of essential oil to my spray bottles. I added sweet orange to my window cleaner, lavender to my degreaser and orange, lavender and chamomile to the all-purpose cleaner. The aromotherapy was fantastic.

And my hands are fine!!!

A bit more about what you will and won’t find in the Shaklee Get Clean system.

The next thing I would like to point out is the lack of waste in this system. A little really does go a long, long way. The Super Concentrate? You literally use just drops of it to make the window cleaner. Drops! I have made and used 2 full bottles (in the provided spray bottles) of the All-Purpose, Window and Degreaser sprays and I have used almost none of my Super Concentrate. Let me put it this way:

To get the same amount of clean as one 16-ounce bottle of Basic H2, you would have to spend:

• Nearly $482 for the equivalent amount of all-purpose cleaner

• $12,250 for the equivalent amount of window cleaner

• $144 for the equivalent amount of degreaser

In terms of environmental savings, there is the waste saved from the landfills and elimination of 248 pounds of greenhouse gas with just One Get Clean Kit! Passing on one Get Clean kit to a friend is equivalent of planting 10 trees!

Special ocaasions only?

We just got home from a mini-trip.

I’m tired.

Seriously tired.

Naturally the very first thing the kids clamored for as we walked back in the house was dinner.

It’s like they expect to be fed every day or something.

I stumbled to the freezer (Did I mention I’m tired?) and did a quick inventory of the contents. Freezer burnt broccoli, chicken nuggets, popsicles, and COOL WHIP whipped topping. Hmmm…..

This mini-trip we just took was not a special occasion, but it sure felt like it. It was incredibly nice to have an “everyday” special day. Maybe I could carry that same feeling through to dinner.

Are you sure they have to be fed?

Everyone was a bit grouchy after being cooped up in the car. Well, make that a lot grouchy. I think we all needed something to smile about.

My family’s all time favorite dessert is something we call Pink Fluff. We serve it at big, important dinners. Because Pink Fluff is awesome.

And besides tasting quite yummy, it is a cinch to make. Why don’t I make this more often? I have all the ingredients on hand almost all the time.

I knew what could pull this evening out of the grumpies. PINK FLUFF!

I grabbed the chicken nuggets (you knew it, didn’t you….) and the COOL WHIP. Nuggets for dinner, Pink Fluff for dessert!

If you have not tasted Pink Fluff, please try it. You can make it in any flavor, just change the flavor of the gelatin. All measurements are approximate. This is a very flexible dessert.

Flexible is awesome. :)

First take 4 ounces (about half a package) of cream cheese. Cube it and toss it in a mixing bowl. Using a mixer, beat it until it softens up. Or you could plan ahead and actually take it out of the fridge ahead of time and let it soften, but mine was on short notice, and this works just as well.

Next boil 1/2 C water. Turn off heat and add in 1/2 of the small package of gelatin dessert. We usually make strawberry. Hence the name….Pink Fluff. Stir for about 2 minutes or until you are sure the gelatin is dissolved. Add the gelatin mix to the cream cheese and mix until it is totally combined.

Next add in about 8 ounces of COOL WHIP. That is about half a tub. Just toss it right in the bowl and mix well. You will probably need to scrape down the sides once or twice.

Scrape all that yumminess into a bowl and stash it in the fridge. Then pull it out at an ordinary dinner and rocket it to a special dinner!

And please don’t tell my Grandma that I shared this super easy recipe with y’all. 😀

Advocare 24 Day Challenge – Day 6

It is day 6 of my Avdocare 24 Day Challenge.

As you can see from the picture above, there has been some weight loss. Just about 2 pounds so far, which is awesome!

I am feeling pretty good. The Advocare Spark drinks still make my eyeballs vibrate. They are crazy!

Right now I am in the section of the 10 Day Cleanse where I don’t have to drink the Fiber Drink.

Thank you Grilled Cheeseus.

I finally had to break the Fiber Drink into three sections because I just could not drink it fast enough. First thing in the morning I added about 1/3 of the packet to 4 ounces of water, then drank it as fast as I could. Immediately after downing it, I added another 1/3 to another 4 ounces of water, downed it, then repeated with the last 1/3. By doing it that way, it didn’t get a chance to thicken up into a chewy mass.

Just something to keep in mind if you try the challenge and find you can’t drink it fast enough in one shot.

I have been tracking my food at Live Strong. They have a fantastic database of food and an easy to use format. You can check out what I’ve been eating by clicking the link below.

My Live Strong Food Diary

I’ll check in again in a few days. :)

A 24 Day Challenge

My weight and I have been in a battle for as long as I can remember.

And it’s not fun.

As an adult my weight has fluctuated between a high of 240 pounds and a low of 125.

I like myself at  about 135. I feel good, my clothes fit well. I try not to go by a number, but that seems to be the weight that I truly feel good. I’m not one to step on a scale daily or even weekly. To be honest, I like to avoid the scale and go by how my favorite pair of jeans fit.

Over the last month or so, I’ve notice that my clothes are not hanging quite right. My favorite jeans a a bit snug. My face looked a bit rounder. I said a quick Hail Mary then took a deep breath and stepped on the scale.

Yea, I put it out there. I’m showing my honest, no fudging, really really true weight.

(covering face with a blanket and whimpering)

Why? Because I have been given an amazing opportunity to try the Advocare 24 Day Challenge. Not only do I get to try, Jimmy gets to try with me! Yay for not doing it alone!!!

Advocare 24 Day Challenge is not a diet or a miracle fat melter.

It is a jump start to a healthier lifestyle.

And y’all are going to help keep me on track! I will be posting once a week with an update of how it is going and my thoughts. Jimmy will be popping in with guest posts also.

I am so excited for my box with all the awesome Advocare goodies to get here! :)
