Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff

Looking into my life from the outside, some may think it is chaotic.

Probably because it is chaotic.

One thing that helps each day is to not sweat the small stuff.

Do you remember many years ago….the series of books by that title?

Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff.

They were amazing books that helped put things in perspective. In the end, it is ALL small stuff.

Guess what? There is a brand new “Don’t Sweat…” book!

  • “In the first new Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff book in nine years, Kristine Carlson shows how moms can live with less stress and more happiness. Kristine Carlson gives mothers tried-and-true advice that will empower them to find greater peace, joy, and harmony within themselves and their homes. Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff for Moms reveals how to: be a mom (not a friend), balance being a woman and a mom, pursue your passion (but not at the expense of your children, and reclaim your family time.”
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I like how each chapter can be read independently from the others. My personal favorite is Chapter 48 – When All Else Fails, Laugh! In our family sometimes that’s all this is left to do, laugh. We can find the humor in almost any situation.
This book is also the perfect gift for the moms in your life.
If you would like to read the first chapter, it is available for free here.

Pinterest? Huh? (plus a giveaway!)

There are so many social networking sites out there now. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn are the ones I am most familiar with.

At least until Facebook changes its format again….

Facebook is where I make sure my family and friends can catch up on my family’s latest doings and pictures.

Twitter is where I rant to and with people I have never met.

LinkedIn is where I pretend to be a grown up.

Have you heard of Pinterest? Pinterest is a newcomer on the social media scene, but it is causing quite a stir.

Pinterest?

It confuses me. I’m not really sure what I am supposed to be doing.

Luckily I was given the opportunity to review (and give away!) a copy of Kelby Carr’s new book – Pinterest For Dummies

And goodness knows I need all the help I can get.

Pinterest For Dummies, will help new users get started creating their Pinterest boards, finding people to follow, and pinning bookmarks. The book will cover:

• What Pinterest is about and why you should use it

• Getting your account set up

• Setting up boards and getting organized

• Pinning, repinning and giving credit where credit is due

• Using hashtags, liking pins, commenting, finding people to follow, checking out Tastemakers, sharing pins with your other social networks, and using search

This book, like all For Dummies books, is written in a logical, easy to follow format. Each step, from requesting a Pinterest invite, registering, setting privacy settings, to the highlight of Pinterest….PINNING!

(Want an invite? Hit me up, I have a few left.)

(I also have a Handy Dandy Pinterest button up….you can follow me!)

Hey y’all! I’m pinning!!

Pinterest For Dummies quickly and concisely answered every question I had about Pinterest. It explained what, how and why.

No, I’m not going to tell you! Buy the book!

Or you could win one right here. 😉

Fun in the (no) sun – Beyond Coastal Review and Giveaway

Sunscreen.

I really have not given it much thought.

For our family, it is not something to be used only while engaging in outdoor activities. Lupus is made worse for many sufferers when exposed to UV rays. I don’t know why. I don’t know how. But I’m not about to chance it. Anything I can do to help keep my lupus quiet, I’m going to do it.

I put it on. I go about my day.

But recently I have begun rethinking some of the things I bring into our home. There are so many yucky icky chemicals in….stuff. After cleaning up my cleaners, I started looking at other items in our home. My sunscreen caught my eye. Aminobenzoic acid? Dioxybenzone? Phenylbenzimidazole? I can’t pronounce those. What are they? Why am I rubbing that on my skin?

Ick.

I was recently given the opportunity to try Beyond Coastal sunscreens.

All Beyond Coastal products are: Gluten Free, Cruelty Free, Fragrance Free, Oxybenzone Free, Paraben Free, Oil Free

A quick glance at the ingredients and I knew this might be exactly what I was looking for. I could actually pronounce them! Larch Tree Extract? Coconut Oil? Comfrey Plant Extract?

When my sunscreens arrived, I was pleasantly surprised at how fresh they smelled. Not fake or chemicaly, but just fresh. As I was playing with each sunscreen my family picked their favorite and disappeared with them. The following is their impressions.

Andrea, 20,  liked the Active Face Stick SPF 30. She says that it goes on very smooth, smells slightly citrusy and feels very light on her skin. She felt it would be just as nice under makeup as it is on its own. She liked the fact that it was a solid stick and not a liquid. She will give it a real workout when she heads to China next week for a study abroad. It’s already packed up in her carry on. :)

Jon, 18, grabbed the Kid’s Natural Sunscreen. As a redhead with very light skin, he knows that sunscreen is important. His impression of this was favorable. He liked that it didn’t smell girly. He also liked that it was easy to apply and disappeared quickly.

Faith, 8, liked the Active Lip Balm. No real review here, but she asked for the “Lip soft stuff” several times. :)

I grabbed the Natural Clear Sunscreen. This comes out of the tube white but blends to clear with no effort. It has a very soft fragrance. It is not greasy at all and feels very light on my skin. I can see this becoming my favorite sunscreen!

I wish I could give a review regarding the effectiveness of the sunscreens, however I live in Washington state and during my review period, the sun did not really show itself. LOL

The awesome people at Beyond Coastal would like to give one lucky reader the opportunity to try their sunscreens! You know you want to!

Tillamook Light Yogurt. Really.

Mornings in my house are a wee bit crazy.

Ok, that may be an understatement.

My breakfast often resembles coffee.

Maybe because it is coffee.

I know, I know….I need to eat in the mornings.

I love yogurt but have you seen how much sugar is in a serving of flavored yogurt?

26 grams of sugar in a single serving of a leading blackberry yogurt.

Dude.

I was recently given the opportunity to try a new yogurt.

Tillamook Light Yogurt.

A serving contains 15 grams of sugar. That is much better

But….

Light? Ewwwww. Have you tried light yogurt? It always has a chalky taste and a yucky mouth feel. Right?

My samples arrived – vanilla and strawberry – and well….it’s light yogurt. I put it in the fridge and avoided it for a few days.

Because it is light yogurt.

But….I love all things Tillamook. Cheese, ice cream, sour cream, butter? Yummmmy!

Finally, I knew I just had to take the plunge and try it. Even if it is light yogurt.

When I opened it, it smelled pretty good. Consistency was nice – not watery like some other light yogurt I have tasted.

And this made me smile.

You can see the little vanilla bean specks in there….. nice touch Tillamook.

I’ve never been a big fan of plain vanilla yogurt so I added some fresh berries.

You know what? It is awesome. No chalky mouth feel at all. It is smooth, creamy and delectable. Vanilla is a huge hit!

I actually looked forward to trying the strawberry!

But it disappeared.

My kiddo says it was fantastic. 😉

I will be adding this to our shopping list with no hesitation.

{Mommy Rambles was provided a sample of Tillamook Light Yogurt. All opinions and yummy yogurt are mine. Except when stolen by my kiddo.}

ProBiotic Restore™ ULTRAProbiotics are beneficial microorganisms that confer health benefits on the host. Our bodies must maintain a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria and harmful bacteria to work at its best. When this balance is disturbed, it can have significant negative effects on our health including poor digestion and absorption of nutrients. Our immune systems are under daily assault from environmental factors, physical and emotional stress, inadequate rest and poor nutritional status. Additionally many individuals do not consume adequate dietary fiber, drink enough water or exercise regularly, which often results in occasional problems with elimination. Even though some individuals supplement their diets with probiotic products, all probiotics are not equal. The multi-strain probiotic complex in ProBiotic Restore ULTRA provides six high potency strains – three species of Lactobacillus and three species of Bifidobacterium. Two billion colony forming units (CFU) ensure full coverage of both the small and large intestines. ProBiotic Restore ULTRA helps replenish normal beneficial intestinal microflora to support healthy immune and intestinal function, while aiding good digestion and enhancing weight management programs.*

Calcium Plus: Bones and teeth need far more than calcium alone to stay strong and healthy. They need a balanced array of minerals including magnesium, manganese, zinc, copper, boron, silicon and potassium plus vitamins C, D, K and more. Calcium Plus is an incredibly effective way to ensure you receive enough calcium to keep bones and teeth strong and healthy.* Calcium Plus delivers two types of highly absorbable calcium, combined with other minerals, vitamins and botanicals.

Amplify A.T.: A revolutionary formula that combines two potent and unique natural ingredients that produce advanced nutritional benefits.* These two super-nutrients, astaxanthin and tocotrienols, are the real secret behind the power of Amplify A.T. For anyone who wants to fight the aging process, Amplify A.T. can help by strengthening the immune system, maintaining healthy blood pressure levels already in the normal range, and providing excellent nutrition for joint health and mobility.* It provides excellent support for skin too, by vitalizing the appearance of skin, helping to reduce the formation of wrinkles and maintaining healthy skin tone.* Its ability to help reduce muscle fatigue and muscle damage while enhancing muscle recovery provides an edge to any athlete.*

Now on to the nitty-gritty. The scale has not moved since my last post. I am still hanging at 149 lbs. But…

My clothes are fitting better.

I have a ton of energy.

And that is awesome.

Get Clean! Plus a giveaway!

I am going to be honest. I went into this review opportunity thinking that I was smarter than the average bear. I already knew that there are things in the average cleaners. Yucky things. We had already made the move several years ago to cleaner cleaners. Our family learned the hard way that the stuff lurking in cleansers can be nasty.

At one point in our daughters young life, it was thought that she might have Kawasaki Disease. At that time, one of the possible causes of this disease was thought to be exposure to cleaners. As soon as Kawasaki Disease was on the table, I went on a mad rampage, purging nasty chemical cleaners. Pine-Sol? Gone. Lysol? Tossed. Windex? See ya. In their place I bought wonderful, natural cleaners. Like Method, Caldrea, and Mrs. Meyers.

Time passed, and it turns out that Faith’s mysterious fevers and illness’s are from a rare genetic disorder called Familial Mediterranean Fever Syndrome. My revamp of our cleaners stayed, but I will admit, I haven’t looked too far into the implications of all those chemicals since our first purging. Have you ever looked at the Household Database? That is some scary stuff.

Meet my cleaner cupboard.

Ok, here is the reality of this shot. I have lots of help.

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you also know I have lupus. What does that have to do with anything? Well, it’s twofold. First, I have limited energy and second, my skin is extra, super, crazy sensitive. Even when using the natural cleaners, my skin breaks out. My hands literally split and rashes creep up my arms. Because obviously something that does that to my skin is ok to be around my kids and pets, right? Right?  Add in the fact that with kids and pets, I’m doing a lot of cleaning. Not only does that hurt my skin, think of the waste. Empty plastic bottles. Landfills. Bad.

Where am I going with this? I’m glad you asked.

I was recently given the opportunity to review the Shaklee Get Clean system.

I figured I would be one tough cookie on this.

Meet the Get Clean system.

One of the most important things is what you won’t find in the Shaklee products, which have been reviewed and endorsed for their safety by Healthy Child Healthy World {http://healthychild.org}.  They believe that health isn’t just about what you put in your body; it’s about everything around you. They bring you a full line of natural and nontoxic cleaning choices that are Safe for You, Your Home, and Your Planet® called Get Clean®.

·         No harmful fumes or hazardous chemicals.

·         Outperforms 20 national leading brands.

·         You would spend $3400 for ready to use cleaners to get the same amount of clean found in the Get Clean Starter Kit!*

·         Features Basic H2® Organic Super Cleaning Concentrate – just 1/4 tsp. makes 16oz. of all-purpose cleaner for only 3 cents.

·         And when you purchase the Get Clean Starter Kit you also make a positive impact on the planet:

·         Keep 108 pounds of packaging waste from landfills.

·         Eliminate 248 pounds of greenhouse gas.

M’kay, that’s good to know, but…..do they work? I was originally going to focus my review on just one product in the Get Clean line, giving y’all the low down truth on how it performed. I took all the yuck cleaners out from under my sink and started using every part of the Get Clean line. By golly, I was going to find the weakest link in this and use that for my review.

This looks better. Now on to the flaw in my review plan. They all work. Not only do they work, they work great. Scratch that, they work amazing.

Laundry? Clean and soft.

Dishes? No spots or haze.

Bathroom? Fresh and clean.

My car? Dust and Cheeto free.

Windows? Streak free.

My review plan? Tossed out like those yucky cleaners. So instead here is what I want you to take away from this review:

My skin is rash free and soft.

I have been using every single part of the Shaklee Get Clean System for over two weeks and my hands are perfect. I have (almost) begun to enjoy cleaning. Now, the products I was sent to review are part of the Get Clean unscented line, but after using them without an incident for a week or so, I took an additional step. I added a few drops of essential oil to my spray bottles. I added sweet orange to my window cleaner, lavender to my degreaser and orange, lavender and chamomile to the all-purpose cleaner. The aromotherapy was fantastic.

And my hands are fine!!!

A bit more about what you will and won’t find in the Shaklee Get Clean system.

The next thing I would like to point out is the lack of waste in this system. A little really does go a long, long way. The Super Concentrate? You literally use just drops of it to make the window cleaner. Drops! I have made and used 2 full bottles (in the provided spray bottles) of the All-Purpose, Window and Degreaser sprays and I have used almost none of my Super Concentrate. Let me put it this way:

To get the same amount of clean as one 16-ounce bottle of Basic H2, you would have to spend:

• Nearly $482 for the equivalent amount of all-purpose cleaner

• $12,250 for the equivalent amount of window cleaner

• $144 for the equivalent amount of degreaser

In terms of environmental savings, there is the waste saved from the landfills and elimination of 248 pounds of greenhouse gas with just One Get Clean Kit! Passing on one Get Clean kit to a friend is equivalent of planting 10 trees!

For more information about the system, check out the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTpBru2Oaj4

Responsibility? Really?

I will be the first to admit that I have been pretty vocal about a certain business’s lack of what I see as responsibility.

The lack of stepping up. Saying, “Dang, something is not right here.”

Today I would like to tell you about a different company.

In 2005 I bought a Tempurpedic Mattress. It was a huge splurge for us. We agonized over it for MONTHS. Shortly before hubby was deploying to the Mediterranean, we took the plunge and bought it.

Can you say “Totally worth every penny!”?

This was such a huge investment for us that we wanted to protect it. Tempurpedic has a special protective cover for the mattresses that when purchased at the same time as the mattress itself, has a 10 year warranty.

Fast forward to June 2011.

Faith, as she does every night, crawled into bed with us. But this night she had an accident. Ok, no biggie, everything is protected and washable.

Except it wasn’t protected. The protective cover didn’t protect. Oh nos. :(

We called Tempurpedic and we were told that there had been a few production issues with the protector we had, but they would send us out a brand new, much improved protector.

M’kay, sounds good.

New one arrived and whoa nelly it was different! We put it right on the bed and life went on.

Until a couple of weeks ago when Faith once again crawled into bed with us and had an accident.

The super-duper new and improved protector didn’t work. AT ALL.

Ewwwww.

We called Tempurpedic once again because….THIS IS NOT RIGHT.

And do you know what they told me???

Ready?

Grab a coffee so you have something to spit on your keyboard when you read what they told me.

Got it?

Ok, they told me….

We made a mistake.

Can you imagine? A huge company admitting that something got past their careful vetting. That an error happened.

It turns out that the super-duper mattress protector we were sent was actually a bed cover and is not designed to provide any protection at all.

What is Tempurpedic doing to fix this?

They are not only sending us an entire new bed, they are upgrading the bed.

Admitting a mistake AND fixing it?

You spit your coffee didn’t you?

Advocare 24 Day Challenge – Day 6

It is day 6 of my Avdocare 24 Day Challenge.

As you can see from the picture above, there has been some weight loss. Just about 2 pounds so far, which is awesome!

I am feeling pretty good. The Advocare Spark drinks still make my eyeballs vibrate. They are crazy!

Right now I am in the section of the 10 Day Cleanse where I don’t have to drink the Fiber Drink.

Thank you Grilled Cheeseus.

I finally had to break the Fiber Drink into three sections because I just could not drink it fast enough. First thing in the morning I added about 1/3 of the packet to 4 ounces of water, then drank it as fast as I could. Immediately after downing it, I added another 1/3 to another 4 ounces of water, downed it, then repeated with the last 1/3. By doing it that way, it didn’t get a chance to thicken up into a chewy mass.

Just something to keep in mind if you try the challenge and find you can’t drink it fast enough in one shot.

I have been tracking my food at Live Strong. They have a fantastic database of food and an easy to use format. You can check out what I’ve been eating by clicking the link below.

My Live Strong Food Diary

I’ll check in again in a few days. :)

Seneca Oatmeal and Fruit cups, revisited. Plus a giveaway!

 WINNER!

Last year I was given the opportunity to review Seneca Oatmeal and Fruit Cups.

I thought that they were a great choice for morning when there is not time for a sit down breakfast, but I did find a few drawbacks.

(Full review here)

I recently had the chance to try the two new flavors, Maple & Brown Sugar and Cranberry Apple.

Both new flavors have a very short ingredient list, which makes the “mom” in me very happy.

We tried the Cranberry Apple first. Just 45 seconds in the microwave and it was the perfect temperature. Peeling back the top, I could smell cranberries! The consistency was  perfect. Not too thin, not too thick. Big cranberries and apples were visible in each spoonful. Love love love this!

Next up is Maple & Brown Sugar. I wanted to like this. I tried to like this. I even added a bit more maple syrup attempting to like this. I just couldn’t. The texture seemed a bit off and while I could smell maple, I didn’t taste any.

Am I an oatmeal snob?

Final verdict for Seneca Oatmeal Cups? LOVE the Cranberry Apple. LOVE. And I can’t wait to find them in stores, because I will be buying them all up. Mine!!! This will live in my pantry right next to the Vanilla Peach from the last taste test. :)

Skipping the Maple & Brown Sugar.

Want to give them a taste for yourself? Of course you do!!

One reader will win a 2-pack of each new flavor of Seneca Farms Oatmeal & Fruit!

Mandatory Entry

Leave a comment below telling me about your child’s favorite breakfast food (1 entry per person)

This giveaway is available to US residents only and will end on March 28th at 11;59 PM EST. Winner will be drawn from all comments by Random.org. Winner will be posted March 29th, and they will have 48 hours to contact me or a new winner will be drawn.

Advocare 24 Day Challenge – Day 1

I blame The Pioneer Woman.

As soon as I found her cookbook, I started cooking big again. By “big”, I mean, big quantities, big hunks of meat, big blobs of butter.

As I began cooking big, my thighs began following suit. Big.

Ok, I know it’s not really The Pioneer Woman’s fault. I was the one tossing the butter in the pan willy-nilly and then eating it all. But it’s my blog, and I can do what I want, so I blame her.

Today I started the Advocare 24 Day Challenge.

And YOU get to follow along as Jimmy and I take this challenge on. Whoo-hoo!

I will be honest and post the good and the bad (if there is any) of this program.

Are you ready? Let’s do this!

First: OmegaPlex soft gels. I will be taking two of these, twice a day with meals. Not much to say about these. They are an omega supplement. So far there are no “fishy burps” with them. (Don’t look at me like you don’t know what I am talking about…)

Next is Herbal Cleanse. This is to be mixed in 8 ounces of water and downed quickly. The downed quickly is my own add on. The reason I added that is because if you are a “sipper” like me, you may find that after a bit, the drink becomes quite thick. As in chewable. I will be drinking it much faster tomorrow. 😉 It tastes fine. Lightly citrus-y, reminiscent of Sunny Delight. The texture is sawdust. Yes, you read that right. Let’s move on. I felt very full for quite a while after drinking it. I drank it at 7:30am and at 10am I forced myself to eat a few grapes and part of an orange. I was THAT full.

The third part of my challenge today is Spark Drink. It can be used 1-3 times a day. I figure I will use it twice a day. In the 24 Day Challenge pack you get two flavors, but when buying it there are many more choices. I have Mandarin Orange and Fruit Punch. I tried the orange first.

My eyeballs are vibrating.

This is a serious energy drink. The taste is better than other energy drinks on the market in my opinion. It doesn’t have that funky aftertaste and dude, it works. I am pounding out this post like a boss.

I’ll check in again in a few days and let you know how it is going.

Mommy Rambles was generously provided with two 24 Day Challenges by Advocare to review. Thoughts and opinions are all my own.
