This is a weekly series that I hope you will take part in. Basically, I will ask a question, you answer. Easy-peasy. 😉 Sometimes the questions will be very simple and easy to answer in one word. Other times they may be more controversial and require a bit thought on your part.
What was your most favorite food as a child?
Mine would probably be macaroni and cheese. I loved the Mission brand. The bright yellow box and meatball dude on the front are treasured memories from my childhood. My Grandma Charles (Who was neither my grandmother or named Charles) would make it almost every day when she was babysitting me. Sadly, it is no longer made. For a while I was able to find a very close approximation in the Golden Grain brand, but I can no longer find that one either. Sigh.
I liked nearly everything as a child, but I couldn’t stand boxed macaroni and cheese — my mom spoiled me with real macaroni and cheese w/ layers of real cheddar and a baked custard throughout. Perhaps my favorite meal was country-fried steak and rice and gravy (yes, rice, I don’t like the lumps in homemade mashed potatoes).
Chicken and dumplings… always has been and probably always will be! It was one of the few things I remember eating when I was little, which might be because it’s my favorite but also might be because my mom didn’t really cook much and chicken and dumplings is one of the only things she makes 🙂
Corn! I loved corn! Still do…but only yellow corn, not that bland, sweet white stuff! Stuff w/ flavor and lots of butter and salt.
Other than that, nearly anything my grandmother cooked – halupkis, goulash, pierogies.
At the top of my list when I was a kid was melted ice cream. My Mamaw used to sit me on her kitchen table and completely spoil me rotten by holding and stirring my dish of ice cream near their woodstove so that the ice cream would become runny the way I liked it. It was usually butter pecan ice cream, but she occasionally also bought chocolate. It’s funny – now I like my ice cream firm and not runny.
My mom said I lived on boxed mac & cheese. I think it was the Kraft brand. I also remember going to the fridge and pulling the cellophane off of a square of sandwich cheese and gobbling the orangey square down. I was not particular about brands at all when I was a kid, but now I can’t stand any of the cheaper brands of cheese-food. I want my sandwich cheese to say cheese and not cheese food or cheese product. (Although I still love Velveeta in certain things and also cheese-in-a-can. Weird.)
We were pretty poor when I was little, so there were a lot of casseroles consumed at dinnertime to stretch the groceries out a bit. My favorite was hot-dog casserole….it had cut up hot dogs, egg noodles, peas, and cream of mushroom soup. I thought it was the best stuff ever. I still like hot dogs, but only in a bun….NOT in a casserole!
I was not a morning person, so Mom would put butter on crackers, toast them in the oven (like regular toast) then I would dip them in my hot chocolate for breakfast.
Boxed mac n cheese! We got to have it every Saturday for lunch. I preferred the spiral kind of pasta instead of the regular macaroni noodle.

Ham and Cheese Casserole. My mom makes it better than anyone else! I absolutely love it!
I’d have to say brownies. But does that count as “food?” I loved Kraft mac&cheese, but maybe my favorite “meal” was roast beef and mashed potatoes. It’s funny to think back to childhood meals – my Mom had such a routine. Mon, Tues & Thurs were usually meat and potatoes. My mom hates veggies, so the only one we really got was corn. Wed was spaghetti night, Fri was fast food and Sunday was pizza. Saturdays I don’t remembers, I guess we were usually out and about. Thanks for bringing back some memories!
