Getting a whole lot of nothing done.

I left the house today with a long list of things that needed accomplished. I was going to do this, and that, and this, and that. I had our course plotted to save the maximum of amount of gas, while also maximizing the amount of things we could squeeze into the few precious hours we have alone to get them done.

I was a mom on a mission. With dad along for the ride.

Yup, gonna get it all done. Check each item off. Feel the stress. Feel the satisfaction of each “to do” being marked as “done’.

Life had other plans for me today.

Less than 5 miles from the house, Jimmy and I found ourselves trapped on a two lane back country road by a traffic jam. A really, really long traffic jam. For the first hour (told you it was a long traffic jam….) I fussed and fretted and stressed. How were we ever going to get all the errands done? Dang it, I had STUFF to do!

For the second hour of the bumper to bumper, I found myself talking to Jimmy a bit more and fussing a bit less. We weren’t going anywhere, and we were obviously not going to get stuff done.

At the 2 1/2 hour mark, my bladder dictated that we get off the road. We found a little hole in the wall greasy spoon and pulled in.

And the stop was not on my “to do” list.

Our gas mileage was shot.

I was hungry.

We sat in that little greasy spoon and ate an amazing lunch. And we talked. And we laughed. And we commiserated with the others who also pulled out of the miserable traffic jam due to full bladders and empty tummy’s.

And it was good.

My “to do” list would say I didn’t accomplish much.

My heart would say I accomplished a whole heck of a lot.

Sometimes life has other plans for us and life knows better than we do every time!
